Arctic light over Utqiagvik

Odyssey Discovery Expeditions

Go where the science lives.

Our flagship is a 4-day immersive professional development expedition to Utqiagvik, Alaska — the heart of Arctic climate science. We also run field programs across the U.S. and around the world. Limited to 8–10 educators per cohort.

The experience

Four days that change how you teach.

You'll stand on sea ice with the scientists measuring it. You'll sit with elders whose families have read this land for generations. You'll see instruments, data, and decisions being made about the planet's most consequential climate signal — in real time.

You'll come home with stories, photographs, contacts, and curriculum ideas your students will feel for years. That's not marketing. That's what the last 150 educators have told us.

Why Utqiagvik

A place at the edge of everything.

Utqiagvik is the northernmost community in the United States — and one of the most studied places on Earth. NOAA, university researchers, and Iñupiat knowledge keepers all do their work here, often within blocks of one another.

I lived and taught here for six years. The relationships we open for you took that long to build.

Sample itinerary

A loose map of four days.

Day 1

Arrival & orientation

Land in Utqiagvik. Meet your cohort over a community dinner. First conversation with a working Arctic researcher and a grounding in what's coming.

Day 2

Field science immersion

Out on the ice (or near it, conditions dependent). Sea ice, permafrost, or marine science with the team doing the work — instruments in hand.

Day 3

Indigenous knowledge & community

Time with Iñupiat knowledge keepers. Conversations about how science and traditional knowledge meet — and where they don't.

Day 4

Integration & departure

Curriculum planning workshop. Bring what you saw home in a form your students can use Monday morning. Depart with your network.

Who this is for

You don't need to be an outdoor expert. You need to be curious.

  • — Science and environmental educators looking for firsthand experience
  • — Curriculum directors and PD leads seeking transformative programming
  • — Teachers who want to teach climate change with conviction
  • — Anyone willing to be a beginner for four days
