Above the Arctic Circle, there comes a point each winter when the sun disappears below the horizon and does not return for weeks. Kirsten experienced five Polar Nights while living and teaching in Utqiaġvik, Alaska. Kirsten Alburg spent more than 20 years teaching in Alaska, including six years in Utqiaġvik above the Arctic Circle. She has experienced five Polar Nights.

Her career has connected classrooms with scientists, field research, conservation, exploration and real-world learning. She is the founder of Odyssey Discovery, connecting educators and students with science beyond the classroom.

Her perspective wasn’t developed in a keynote workshop. It was shaped through decades of classrooms, remote communities, Arctic life, field experiences, unexpected plans and the continual decision to remain curious about what might be possible next.
