Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship — Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions apply to participation in the Odyssey Discovery Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship (“Fellowship”) operated by Kirsten Alburg LLC d/b/a Odyssey Discovery (“Odyssey Discovery,” “Odyssey,” “we,” or “us”).

By submitting an application, an applicant acknowledges that they have reviewed the publicly available Fellowship information. Applicants do not owe a Fellowship payment simply by applying.

If accepted, a Fellow will receive additional information and must agree to the applicable Fellowship Agreement and payment terms before submitting a commitment payment.

1. Fellowship Overview

The Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship is a professional learning experience designed to connect educators with real-world Arctic science, researchers, communities, environments, and field-based learning in and around Utqiaġvik, Alaska.

Summer 2027 planned Fellowship dates are:

• • June 18–27, 2027
• • July 9–18, 2027
• • July 30–August 8, 2027

Each expedition is limited to approximately 10 educators.

Additional dates may be offered if sufficient educator interest, funding, staffing, lodging, partner availability, and operational conditions support an additional cohort.

Published dates represent planned Fellowship cohorts and are subject to final operational confirmation.

2. Application and Selection

Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance.

Odyssey Discovery reviews applicants for overall Fellowship fit, including professional relevance, interest in real-world science and learning, willingness to participate fully in the Fellowship experience, ability to meet program requirements, and willingness to participate in the Fellowship funding process.

Applicants are not selected based on their personal wealth or their ability to personally pay the full Fellowship fee.

Educators do not need to have their Fellowship funding secured before applying.

3. Fellowship Fee

The 2027 Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship fee is $12,975 per Fellow.

For accepted Fellows:

• • Commitment payment: $500
• • The $500 commitment payment is credited toward the total Fellowship fee.
• • Remaining Fellowship balance after the commitment payment: $12,475

Submitting an application does not create a payment obligation.

The $500 commitment payment is requested only after acceptance and completion of the applicable acceptance and agreement process.

4. What the Fellowship Fee Includes

The Fellowship fee is intended to cover the Odyssey Discovery Arctic Fellowship program and the program components specifically identified in the Fellow's final Fellowship materials.

Program components may include, as applicable:

• • Fellowship lodging
• • Program-related ground transportation
• • Scheduled field experiences
• • Scheduled researcher, scientist, educator, community, or partner experiences
• • Fellowship coordination
• • Expedition leadership
• • Educational resources and materials
• • Program administration
• • Other specifically identified Fellowship experiences

The exact itinerary, activities, speakers, researchers, partners, transportation arrangements, lodging, and sequence of activities may change because of weather, safety, availability, local conditions, research schedules, transportation, or other operational circumstances.

5. What Is Not Included

Unless Odyssey Discovery expressly states otherwise in writing, the Fellowship fee does not include:

• • Airfare or other transportation to and from Utqiaġvik, Alaska
• • Most meals
• • Airline baggage fees
• • Personal purchases
• • Independent activities
• • Independent transportation
• • Optional experiences not included in the Fellowship itinerary
• • Personal travel before or after the Fellowship
• • Travel insurance
• • Other personal travel expenses

Fellows are responsible for understanding and planning for these additional costs.

6. Fellowship Funding

Do not let the Fellowship cost stop you from applying.

Applicants are not expected to already have $12,975 personally available in order to apply.

If selected, the Fellow and Odyssey Discovery work together to pursue appropriate funding for the Fellowship.

Odyssey Discovery may support selected Fellows through funding strategy, tools, templates, funding resources, school or district request materials, grant-ready program information, sponsorship materials, and guidance on appropriate next steps.

Odyssey Discovery may also independently pursue sponsors, partners, or other funding opportunities that could support educator Fellowships.

Potential funding sources may include:

• • Schools and school districts
• • Professional-development funds
• • Education foundations
• • Grants and educator fellowships
• • Community foundations
• • Professional associations
• • Corporate or community sponsors
• • Odyssey Discovery funding partners
• • Fellow contributions
• • A combination of funding sources

A Fellow may choose to personally contribute toward some or all of their Fellowship cost.

Odyssey Discovery does not expect every Fellow to personally pay the entire $12,975 Fellowship fee out of pocket.

However, Fellows are expected to participate reasonably and actively in the funding process, particularly when funding opportunities require action, information, applications, requests, or communication from the individual educator.

Outside funding decisions are made by independent schools, districts, foundations, sponsors, grantmakers, partners, and other organizations. Therefore, Odyssey Discovery cannot guarantee that any individual Fellow will receive partial or full outside funding.

Acceptance into the Fellowship does not constitute a promise of funding.

7. Commitment Payment

Following acceptance, an educator may be invited to secure their Fellowship position by completing the required Fellowship Agreement process and submitting the $500 commitment payment.

The $500 payment is applied toward the $12,975 Fellowship fee and is not an additional fee.

The treatment of the commitment payment in circumstances including Fellow withdrawal, inability to secure Fellowship funding, transfer to another available expedition, Odyssey Discovery cancellation, or a Fellowship NO-GO decision will be governed by the final Fellowship Agreement accepted by the Fellow before payment.

No applicant should submit the $500 commitment payment until they have received and reviewed the applicable Fellowship Agreement and payment terms.

8. Fellowship Funding Deadline and Remaining Balance

Accepted Fellows are expected to work with Odyssey Discovery toward securing their remaining Fellowship funding according to the deadlines communicated for their cohort.

The remaining balance following the $500 commitment payment is $12,475.

Funding may come from one source or multiple sources.

Payment deadlines, paid-in-full requirements, approved extensions, transfers, withdrawals, and other financial requirements will be governed by the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

9. Cohort GO / NO-GO Confirmation

Each Summer 2027 Arctic Discovery expedition is subject to sufficient funded participation and final operational confirmation.

Odyssey Discovery will make a final GO / NO-GO determination approximately 90 days before departure.

Current planned final decision dates are:

• • June 18–27 Fellowship: March 20, 2027
• • July 9–18 Fellowship: April 10, 2027
• • July 30–August 8 Fellowship: May 1, 2027

Odyssey Discovery may confirm a cohort earlier when sufficient financial and operational requirements have been satisfied.

A published Fellowship date, acceptance, or commitment payment should not be interpreted as a guarantee that a particular cohort will operate.

Odyssey Discovery will evaluate factors including funded participation, program revenue, actual program costs, expedition leadership, lodging, transportation, partner availability, safety, operational readiness, and other material considerations.

Odyssey Discovery does not currently publish a fixed minimum number of Fellows required for a cohort to operate. Cohort viability will be based on approved financial and operational requirements.

10. Travel Arrangements Before GO Confirmation

Because Arctic travel can involve significant cost and disruption, Fellows should make travel purchases carefully before their cohort receives final GO confirmation.

Where appropriate, Fellows should consider refundable or changeable airfare and appropriate travel insurance.

Fellows are responsible for understanding the terms and restrictions of transportation, lodging, insurance, or other travel arrangements they purchase independently.

Odyssey Discovery is not responsible for the policies of airlines, insurers, hotels, transportation companies, or other independent travel providers.

11. Arctic Weather and Travel Disruption

Travel to and within Arctic Alaska can be affected by fog, wind, storms, aviation disruptions, mechanical issues, road conditions, research schedules, wildlife, and other circumstances outside Odyssey Discovery's control.

Flights may be delayed or cancelled.

Activities may need to be changed, rescheduled, substituted, relocated, or cancelled.

Fellows acknowledge that flexibility is an inherent part of participating in an Arctic field experience.

Odyssey Discovery will make reasonable efforts to deliver a meaningful Fellowship experience while prioritizing participant safety and responding appropriately to conditions in the field.

Specific rights and obligations resulting from major travel or program disruptions will be governed by the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

12. Program Changes

Researchers, scientists, community partners, field sites, activities, lodging, transportation arrangements, and itinerary details may change.

Odyssey Discovery may make reasonable substitutions or modifications when necessary because of:

• • Weather
• • Safety
• • Transportation
• • Research schedules
• • Partner availability
• • Wildlife or environmental conditions
• • Facility availability
• • Local conditions
• • Events beyond Odyssey Discovery's reasonable control

A specific researcher, speaker, activity, field site, or itinerary sequence should not be considered guaranteed unless expressly stated otherwise in the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

13. Participant Responsibilities

Fellows are expected to:

• • Participate professionally and respectfully
• • Follow reasonable safety instructions
• • Respect local communities, cultures, researchers, partners, and other Fellows
• • Follow applicable laws and program requirements
• • Provide accurate information required for participation
• • Meet applicable travel and payment deadlines
• • Communicate material issues that could affect participation
• • Participate appropriately in the Fellowship funding process
• • Be prepared for changing Arctic weather and field conditions
• • Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with a professional educator Fellowship

Odyssey Discovery reserves the right to address conduct that materially affects safety, program operations, other participants, partners, or the Fellowship experience, subject to the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

14. Health, Safety, and Personal Readiness

The Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship may involve outdoor activities, uneven terrain, variable weather, cold temperatures, walking, transportation in remote environments, and other conditions associated with field-based experiences in Arctic Alaska.

Applicants and Fellows are responsible for reviewing program expectations and determining whether they can safely participate.

Participants should seek appropriate professional advice regarding their individual circumstances when needed.

Odyssey Discovery may establish reasonable safety and participation requirements for particular activities.

15. Travel Insurance

Odyssey Discovery may strongly recommend or require appropriate travel insurance depending on the final Fellowship structure and applicable Fellowship Agreement.

Fellows are responsible for reviewing any insurance policy carefully, including exclusions, covered reasons, reimbursement requirements, medical coverage, trip interruption, cancellation, and travel-delay provisions.

Odyssey Discovery does not guarantee that an insurer will reimburse a particular loss.

16. Withdrawal, Cancellation, Transfer, and Credit

The specific financial consequences of:

• • Voluntary Fellow withdrawal
• • Failure to secure sufficient Fellowship funding
• • Transfer requests
• • Future Fellowship credits
• • Odyssey Discovery cancellation
• • Cohort NO-GO decisions
• • Weather or travel disruption
• • Failure to meet payment deadlines

will be governed by the final Fellowship Agreement accepted by the Fellow.

The public website should not be interpreted as creating a refund, transfer, or credit right beyond those contained in the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

17. Sponsors and Outside Funding

Funding provided by a school, district, foundation, sponsor, partner, grantmaker, or other third party may be subject to additional requirements established by that organization.

Odyssey Discovery does not control the decisions, timelines, eligibility requirements, or payment policies of independent funding organizations.

Where funding is designated for a particular Fellow, cohort, or purpose, Odyssey Discovery will administer that funding according to the applicable funding arrangement and Fellowship terms.

18. Photography, Recording, and Media

Any photography, video, recording, testimonial, publicity, or media permissions involving Fellows will be governed by applicable consent processes and program policies.

Participation in the Fellowship does not automatically grant Odyssey Discovery unrestricted rights to use an educator's likeness for promotional purposes beyond rights expressly agreed to by the participant.

19. Intellectual Property and Educational Materials

Unless otherwise stated, Odyssey Discovery retains rights to Odyssey-created Fellowship materials, frameworks, branding, and program content.

Researchers, partners, organizations, and other contributors retain rights to their respective materials and intellectual property unless otherwise agreed.

Fellows may use materials according to the permissions communicated with those materials.

20. No Guarantee of Particular Outcomes

Odyssey Discovery cannot guarantee:

• • Fellowship funding
• • Grant or sponsorship awards
• • A particular researcher or speaker
• • Particular wildlife sightings
• • Particular weather
• • An unchanged itinerary
• • Specific classroom, career, or professional outcomes
• • Operation of a cohort before final GO confirmation

Odyssey Discovery's responsibility is to make reasonable efforts to provide the professional learning experience described in the applicable Fellowship materials and agreement, subject to conditions inherent in Arctic field programs.

21. Relationship Between These Public Terms and the Fellowship Agreement

These public Terms & Conditions provide general information about the Arctic Discovery Educator Fellowship.

An accepted Fellow may be required to enter into a more detailed Fellowship Agreement before submitting a commitment payment or participating.

If there is a conflict between these public Terms & Conditions and an executed Fellowship Agreement, the executed Fellowship Agreement will govern to the extent permitted by applicable law.

22. Updates to These Terms

Odyssey Discovery may update these public Terms & Conditions as the 2027 Fellowship program is finalized.

Material terms applicable to an accepted Fellow's payment and participation will be provided through the applicable Fellowship Agreement.

The version of the Fellowship Agreement accepted by the Fellow will govern that Fellow's participation as provided in that agreement.
